Once again, two rock falls have buried roads in northern Italy: on Lake Ledro near Lake Garda and in Trentino, searches were carried out in the water and in the forest for missing people.

Pieve di Ledro/Folgaria - Lake Ledro is an insider tip among Italy fans: It is only eleven kilometers west of Riva and offers a romantic rocky backdrop.

Tourists love the peace and quiet here, which is not the case on Lake Garda.

A spectacular road below the rocky slopes connects the towns of Molina di Ledro on the east bank and Pieve di Ledro on the west bank.

Several hiking trails also cross the steep north bank.

Italy: rocky outcropping thunders across the road into the lake

According to the province of Trento, on Sunday evening (February 11th), a 25 meter long and four meter high section of rock thundered onto the riverside road at around 6:45 p.m., and between 300 and 400 cubic meters of fur crashed onto the road.

The boulders broke off directly below the pedestrian promenade that runs above the street.

The boulders broke through the guardrail and landed in the water.

According to ladige.it

, it had rained heavily beforehand

.

About twenty years ago the rock passage was expanded to make it easier for trucks to pass through.

This created an overhang that now collapsed.

The road between the western shore of Lake Ledro and Riva is blocked until further notice.

For many locals this means enormous detours.

.

The first few hours after the rockslide were marked by great concern, as no one knew whether anyone had been buried under the rock masses or whether a car had been thrown into the lake.

Three disaster search dogs from Trent were ordered to the scene of the accident, but they did not detect any signs of people.

A video shows the search operation.

A thermal imaging camera was also used to search for people: no result.

Worried search for missing people in the lake

The lake was also inspected by boat to rule out the possibility of a vehicle ending up in the lake.

It was checked for oil stains.

But here too the all-clear was given in the evening.

Mayor Renato Girardi said at the scene: “At this moment the most important thing is that no one is injured.

However, I don’t think it will be quick or easy to clear the state highway of all the collapsed material.”

The lake was searched again on Monday for traces of oil to dispel any doubts about the vehicles that ended up in the lake.

The search again produced a negative result.

Geologists are currently assessing the crash site.

The closures for pedestrians and vehicle traffic have been extended.

Rockfall blocks important road in the western Dolomites

A rockslide also hit a road in the Trento mountains east of the Adige Valley on Monday night: near Folgaria, about 20 kilometers east of Rovereto, rocks and stones thundered onto the serpentines of the road to Val d'Astico in Veneto.

Deep holes in the asphalt show the force with which the rocks crashed onto the road.

It's unthinkable what would have happened if they had hit a car.

According to the Province of Trento, the scene of the accident was also searched for injuries or torn away vehicles, but no victims were discovered.

“Inspections are currently underway to assess the interventions to be carried out,” it said.

A geologist from the autonomous province of Trento is on site.

The technicians from the Road Management Service and the Road and Railway Construction Service are currently assessing the extent of the rockfall and the interventions to be carried out.

Here, too, the road is closed until further notice, which can mean long detours for locals and Urtliabhers.

Just a week ago, a rock avalanche fell on the Gardesana road from Trento to Lake Garda.

In nearby Valsugana, roads, rails and a cycle path were hit by falling rocks two weeks ago.

The Brenner motorway was also recently hit by rocks.
