Defense Minister Pistorius rightly demands that Germany “become ready for war.
Because Trump's threat not to stand by Berlin in the event of a NATO emergency makes Germany fair game for Putin, comments Georg Anastasiadis.
When SPD Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius recently demanded that Germany must become “war-ready,” the usual lamentation began – behind the scenes, even in the ranks of the CDU and CSU.
You can't say it like that!
Pistorius had consciously and correctly chosen the rousing term “war-ready” rather than “defense-capable”, which was more flattering to German ears, because he aimed at restoring military deterrence.
After Donald Trump's shock warning, even the simpler minds in Pistorius' SPD must have understood how necessary massive investments are in the (re-)armament of the Bundeswehr.
To this day, the (formerly) Russia-friendly wing around parliamentary group leader Rolf Mützenich is hesitant to draw the necessary conclusions from the Chancellor's turnaround speech, and the traffic light as a whole is still having difficulty prioritizing national defense in the federal budget in line with the new threat situation demanded.
Despite having special assets, Pistorius does not receive nearly the resources he considers necessary.
With his warning, Trump is making Germany fair game for Putin
Of course, you don't have to wonder for long which NATO country Trump wanted to declare to be fair game for Putin (that's how drastically CDU defense expert Norbert Röttgen puts it) with his drastic warning not to defend it against a warlord Putin striving for hegemony in the event of an attack : It is Germany, which he was already on the lookout for during the time of CDU Chancellor Angela Merkel because, as a global free rider, it let the USA pay for its security, but preferred to make its gas deals with Putin.
Even Obama, who is revered in this country, was not happy about this.
Now Berlin has to turn things around and take its security into its own hands again.
There are still a few years left.
But to do this, the front in Ukraine must now be held.
