Angela Hohmann never aspired to a career in the Bundestag, but now the 60-year-old is heading to Berlin.

The repeat of the Berlin election mishap is to blame.

Celle/Berlin - In 2021, Angela Hohmann did what a politician does before a federal election: campaigning.

The local politician from Celle primarily campaigned for her SPD, rather than for herself.

The SPD Lower Saxony had placed her at number 28 on the list.

Entry into the Bundestag was considered unlikely - and Hohmann didn't want to go to the capital anyway.

“That was never my goal.

“I’m a local politician through and through,” she says in an interview with

.

Repeat election in Berlin has consequences for Lower Saxony: “Now it has caught me”

Hohmann has been in the SPD since 2002.

“I've been on lists many times, but always way back.

When we put together the list in spring 2021, the SPD's poll numbers were in the basement.

Accordingly, 16-17 representatives from Lower Saxony would have moved into the Bundestag, so 28th place was far back and safe for me." But there was a furious final spurt by the Social Democrats, which ended with 20 direct mandates.

Because there were a few changes in the party (two members of the Bundestag became ministers in Lower Saxony), Hohmann continued to move up the state list.

Angela Hohmann has been in the SPD since 2002 - and surprisingly in the Bundestag since 2024.

She is also a member of the Federal Executive Board of the Social Democrats.

The fact that she now sits in the Bundestag is due to the result of the partial repeat of the federal election in Berlin.

Because voter turnout was lower than in 2021 and the SPD got fewer votes, the SPD Berlin is losing a compensatory mandate.

That in turn goes to Lower Saxony and Hohmann.

That wasn't planned.

“I knew that I would be next and I always said when I happened to speak to people from the Bundestag faction: everyone please stay healthy, everyone stay in line until the end of this legislative period.” Hohmann laughs: “But now It catches me and then I do it.” Out of responsibility to the voters and to her party, as she had already told our editorial team in advance.

“But I can’t say whether I’m happy until I get my first impressions.”

Berlin election: “An election party without a campaign is strange”

In Berlin, Hohmann wants to focus primarily on finance and social issues.

In all likelihood she will take over the committees from Ana-Maria Trasnea.

The Berlin Social Democrat had to make way for Hohmann and was a full member of the family committee.

The local politician experienced election day in her home country.

“A few friends from the SPD here in Celle organized an election party.

But an election party without a campaign is strange.” After all, this election campaign was more than two years ago.

“We always updated the website of the Berlin State Returning Officer and the Federal Returning Officer and then used the numbers to calculate ourselves what the development was.

It was a little complicated, but we managed it.”
