The moving beer crate from Oberndorf: How much work goes into a carnival float

Highlights: The moving beer crate from Oberndorf: How much work goes into a carnival float. “The car is the box, we are the bottles!” explains Done Soyer with a laugh. The boys implemented the motto well: on a brown background, the black and gold inscription “Gut Forsting” in squiggly letters adorns the sides of the float. The brewery's logo flashes above it, alongside advertising posters for the boys' upcoming festivals. To disguise themselves, they ordered yellow “beer suits” online.

A lap at the Ebersberg carnival procession is quickly completed.

But there is more work involved in the lovingly decorated cars than some might think.

At the Oberndorf boys' club, for example.

Oberndorf

– Between kilometers of fields and hectares of forests, the headlights of several tractors illuminate the night sky on a February evening.

There is a lot of activity going on: in a hall in the tranquil hamlet of Pollmoos (town of Ebersberg), the boys from Oberndorf are working on their carnival float.

Or rather: they bring him back to operational readiness.

“He was already in action,” says Anton “Done” Soyer, chairman of the local boys’ club, with a grin.

“Now we have to get it ready for the next move.”

This year apolitical - motto: “Beer and party”

Every year the boys from Oberndorf put in a new effort to design an imaginative car.

From the moped to the comic character “Werner” to “Save the Bees”, everything was there in terms of the motto.

“We usually embody a current topic,” says first cashier Leo Soyer.

“This year we wanted to behave politically neutral.” On the occasion of the upcoming boys’ festival in May, the men at the annual general meeting at the beginning of the year decided on the motto “Beer and Party”.

Simply put: “The car is the box, we are the bottles!” explains Done Soyer with a laugh.

The people of Oberndorf were already at the carnival parades in Tattenhausen (Rosenheim district) and Edling (Altlandkreis Wasserburg).

“It was a blast,” says Done Soyer.

But until the time came, the boys put in tons of hours of work in their car.

Since January, the men have been working on their foolish project almost every day.

“It's a lot of work,” reports Soyer, who worked on the carpentry every day after work and on weekends.

Everyone helps together - we work after work

He put together over 60 hours of work.

But the boys can't complain about the lack of support.

With a total of 140 members, the construction went well.

“It's part of the club to do something sometimes.

Anyone who wants to come along can also be seen setting up the car,” says Leo Soyer, explaining the internal agreement.

Together the boys put together their carnival float, the basic structure of which is built on a low-loader.

“We always get it from the Brummer-Lassmann contracting company, they are also members of our club,” says Tobi Czachary.

The guys built the railing of their beer crate from old bar paneling and the walls from discarded panels.

“We get a lot of sponsorship, we pay the rest from the club treasury,” says Leo Soyer, explaining the finances.

The boys didn't have to buy much, even the paint was left over from last year's car, adds Martin Zoßeder.

The cost of the car is therefore relatively low.

The young men spent around 2,000 euros on materials and drinks.

They recoup their expenses through other sources of income, such as the popular Pampas party in August.

They also use the same base frame every year, which saves money and, above all, time.

High security hurdles for moving

In order for you to be able to take part in the parades, the carnival float must meet certain requirements.

The police and organizers check security on the “beer crate” before every carnival parade.

“The railing must be solid and the stairs must be safe.

“We’re only allowed to have a certain amount of alcohol,” says Done Soyer.

The driver and two people walking next to the celebrating car must remain sober.

“But that’s not a problem,” says Leo Soyer.

“We have people there who like to do it.”

Today the people of Oberndorf are once again making their rounds at the Ebersberg carnival parade.

The boys have Guadl with them for the children, and they throw the carnival bar on the market square for the adults.
