Two years.
This is the average time a patient must submit to obtain a check-up appointment with the Expert Centers coordinated by the FondaMental foundation.
Ten years after their creation, these Centers are literally victims of their success.
Designed and deployed by the eponymous Foundation, these Centers support patients living with depression, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder or autism spectrum disorder.
Around fifty Centers are now spread across the country and have made it possible to diagnose and monitor more than 20,000 patients.

These Centers have demonstrated their effectiveness.
According to the studies carried out, 12 months after an initial assessment carried out in an Expert Center, the health of their patients improves significantly: hospitalizations halved, progress in compliance with treatments and reduction in the intensity of symptoms, improvement in the management of the patient's other illnesses.
The Expert Centers system is also envied and copied internationally.

How to explain such success?
The model developed for the management of mental illnesses within these Expert Centers is innovative because it makes it possible to offer patients a complete assessment, provide them with personalized therapeutic recommendations, and enable them to benefit from the latest research progress.
The characteristics of the patients monitored there feed an anonymized database allowing researchers to better understand mental illnesses, to identify subgroups of patients and the treatments that are most suitable for them.
The Expert Centers thus establish a virtuous circle which allows progress towards precision psychiatry and tailor-made support.
This is a major turning point for psychiatry.
Thanks to advances in research, mental illnesses are now recognized as illnesses like any other that are increasingly diagnosed and treated.
For example, we helped to show that 40% of psychiatric illnesses are associated with inflammation.
And that by treating this inflammation and its consequences, we improve the prognosis of patients with a mental illness, or even cure them in certain cases.
Waiting times before having an appointment at one of the Expert Centers are too long today and constitute a real loss of opportunity for patients.
We have also shown the frequent association of somatic diseases (cardiovascular, metabolic syndrome, etc.) with mental illnesses, highlighting the need to carry out comprehensive psychiatric and somatic assessments.
We have identified genes that could explain the origin of autism or schizophrenia.
This allows us, on the one hand, to better diagnose these diseases, and on the other hand to implement prevention strategies.
We have highlighted the close link between our intestinal flora and our brain.
This allows us to develop a new research program to test the effectiveness of polymicrobiotherapy (combination of probiotics) in depression, or to explore avenues for a good diet for mental health.
Finally, progress in brain imaging opens up the possibility of refining our knowledge of different mental illnesses and better targeting therapies using transcranial stimulation, particularly for the treatment of certain resistant depressions.
A sign of the dynamism of this research in psychiatry within the Expert Centers, more than 300 international scientific publications based on their cohorts, which are among the largest in the world, have been produced in the space of ten years.
A dynamism recognized by international juries and public authorities who selected psychiatry to be the subject of three ambitious projects of unprecedented scale to further accelerate innovation in psychiatry: the PEPR ProPSY, the Brain & Mind biocluster, the InnovAND University Hospital Institute.
The health crisis has caused an explosion in anxiety and depressive disorders (+ 30%) and has put the central subject of mental health at the heart of the news.
Waiting times before having an appointment at one of the Expert Centers are too long today and constitute a real loss of opportunity for patients.
While one in three people will experience an episode of mental illness in their lifetime, it is urgent to generalize access to Expert Centers to all French people who need it.
