A lot of traffic jams can be expected, especially in the area around Munich and on the routes south.

The Bavarian winter holidays also coincide with the holidays in seven German federal states.

“Before the Füssen/Reutte border crossing at the border tunnel, you have to expect significant disruptions due to block processing, which will quickly lead to a 30 to 60 minute waiting time,” says Alexander Kreipl, traffic expert at ADAC Südbayern.

Construction sites increase the potential for traffic jams during the carnival holidays

In addition to the high traffic density on the trunk roads and motorways of the other Alpine countries, the situation is getting worse.

“Beyond the border, the ski areas that can be reached via the Tauern Autobahn are likely to be particularly affected.

Due to the tunnel construction site between Golling andwerfen, the route is only accessible in one lane.” Long waiting times are to be expected on the Fernpass Füssen/Reutte and on the Brenner motorway.

Current construction sites with potential for traffic jams

  • A8 Dasing – Adelzhausen

  • A94 Feldkirchen – Patties

  • A93 near Raubling

Danger of traffic jams at Lake Achensee – the state of Tyrol only wants to allow a fraction of the cars through with metering traffic lights

A special feature this year is Austria's reaction to the long traffic jams on a popular alternative route on Lake Achensee towards Zillertal.

In order to reduce the flow of holidaymakers, the state of Tyrol has installed a so-called metering light behind the border and in front of the Achenkirch municipal area, which only allows a fraction of the cars through.

This will be put into operation on February 10th and 17th.

“This measure can certainly provide relief for residents, but holidaymakers have to expect additional waiting times and even more traffic on the motorways,” says Alexander Kreipl.

Warning signs at the A8 motorway exit near Holzkirchen are intended to warn travelers early when the traffic lights on the popular toll alternative route are active.

Tips from the traffic expert: How to get to your holiday destination stress-free

The highest traffic volume is expected on weekends.

Nevertheless, holidaymakers should expect many day-trippers to the ski areas even during the week when the weather is good.

Holidaymakers should definitely take winter equipment with them when traveling to the ski areas.

Winter road conditions can occur even at medium altitudes.

In order to start your carnival holiday stress-free, weekends that are prone to traffic jams should be avoided if possible.

Otherwise, you should allow enough time to arrive safely at your vacation destination.

In addition, there should be enough drinks available in the car and breaks and games should be planned for children to make the time in traffic jams as pleasant as possible.
