Anyone who wants to visit the Aquadome in Bad Wiessee is currently faced with closed doors: the aquarium at Tegernsee is closed.

A report should clarify the need for renovation.

Bad Wiessee

– The Aquadome in Bad Wiessee was put into operation in 2005 and is considered the largest freshwater aquarium in Bavaria.

Around 20 fish species native to Tegernsee cavort in five pools here.

However, the tourist attraction is currently closed “until further notice,” as it says on a note at the entrance.

Cleaning and maintenance work is pending.

How extensive the measures will be and whether a major renovation is necessary will obviously first have to be clarified by an expert report.

The owner of the building in which the Aquadome is housed and which is located in the immediate vicinity of the fish hatchery is the municipality of Bad Wiessee.

The Upper Bavaria district provides technical support to the municipality with its specialist advice on fishing.

Their representatives are also regularly on site to inspect the Aquadome.

During one such visit, the consultants recently noticed “that a major renovation could be necessary,” reports Bernhard Gum, head of the consultants, when asked.

The community was then recommended to have the aquarium examined by an expert.

“It’s about whether the structural condition is still OK,” says Gum.

Need for renovation identified through specialist advice

Specifically, the stability of the pools should be checked.

They could have suffered over the many years, among other things due to the condensation that forms on the outside of the glass walls and runs down there, as Gum explains.

Hilmar Danzinger, managing director of the Bad Wiessee community, also confirms this.

The water pressure in the aquariums is high.

“We’ll have to have an expert take a look at it.”

Otherwise, Danzinger speaks of normal inspection and cleaning work that takes place regularly in the Aquadome in winter.

The manager says it is currently not possible to predict when the facility will open its doors again.

“But it won’t take too long,” he says.

If the place fills up with guests again during the season, the pools of the Aquadome would probably also fill up with water and fish again.

The containers are currently left out.

Allegations of neglect denied

According to the district's website, the total of 60,000 liters of water in the aquariums are usually replaced with fresh water from the lake three times a day.

The Tegernsee fishery takes care of the operation on site.

You make sure “that the fish are kept there in a species-appropriate manner” and take care of the fish stock, explains the fisheries advisory service.

Nevertheless, in the past there have always been critical voices from visitors who complain that the pools are dirty and unkempt.

Similar to Tegernsee fishing boss Christoph von Preysing in the past, Gum also clearly contradicts such assumptions: “On the contrary,” he says.

Just a year and a half ago, the district, which is also responsible for the neighboring hatchery, installed a UV system to additionally disinfect the lake water that flows into both the hatchery and the Aquadome pools.

“We tried to position ourselves even better,” says the expert.
