Love doesn't knock at your door?
Don't have anyone special to celebrate Valentine's Day with this Wednesday?
The reason may simply be a matter of geography.
Census Bureau data show that some U.S. states and cities have a higher ratio of single men to women than other regions of the country.
Although these numbers do not guarantee success in love, they do suggest that meeting people available for a relationship will probably be easier where more singles live.
“The more candidates there are in a given market, the greater the chances of forging a romantic partnership or marriage,” the Census Bureau wrote in a recent article.
“The proportion of single men and women is a critical indicator of the potential availability to (form) couples.”
The most recent Census data shows that
46.4% of American adults are single
, this includes those who are divorced, widowed, and those who have never married, despite being in a formal relationship for some time.
Although the national rate of single adults is less than 50%, the state with the highest proportion of singles is
New Mexico
, with 57% of adults divorced, never married, widowed or separated.
Additionally, the data also showed that the majority of singles in New Mexico have never been married, at 37%, while
Utah
has the lowest rate of singles, at only 44.7%.
Likewise, Pennsylvania is the state with the highest rate of adults who have never married, with one in four.
And regarding same-sex couples, the Census Bureau specifies that they form around 1.2 million households in the country: 740,000 couples were married and about 536,000 were not.
