In Italy we need a regulatory context that favors greater use of green hydrogen, as part of a national strategy that directs efforts towards the consolidation of the supply chain and the pursuit of decarbonisation objectives.

    This is supported by CDP which dedicates an in-depth study to the topic, suggesting tools and strategies.

    For Cdp, incentive mechanisms are needed for the production of green hydrogen capable of bridging the cost gap compared to fossil fuels, in addition to those already provided for by the Pnrr through a specific spending component and the simplification of the issuing of authorizations and support for research and industrial innovation, starting from the implementation of the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI).

   In fact, in Italy, according to the CDP document, the future growth in the use of green hydrogen benefits from some strengths compared to the main European peers.

    Among these, the analysis indicates a manufacturing system that ranks first in the EU for the production of thermal and mechanical technologies convertible to hydrogen;

a capillary gas network reconvertible to hydrogen;

a growing production of renewable energy and development of biomethane, which make hydrogen easily integrated into the energy system;

a strategic geographical position that makes our country an ideal energy hub, in particular for flows coming from North Africa.

All this in short would allow for greater production capable of offering a greater contribution to decarbonisation in hard-to-abate industrial sectors in line with the prospect of large-scale use of green hydrogen significantly encouraged by EU policies on the decarbonisation of the European manufacturing industry, as demonstrated the package of proposals contained in Fit-for-55, the REPowerEU Communication and the NextGenerationEU funds, with very ambitious objectives for 2030.
