Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin was discharged from Walter Reed National Medical Center this Tuesday at 3:30 pm (ET) after being rushed to the hospital facility last Sunday for a problem in the bladder.
Austin was expected to resume his duties as Secretary of Defense around 5:00 pm ET.
The White House and Congress were notified of the decision.
Austin had been transferred to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center
around 2:20 p.m. last Sunday, Air Force Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder, Pentagon press secretary, reported at the time.
Austin's medical discharge was given after consultations with the hospital's medical team.
According to a statement Tuesday, Austin's bladder problem
is unrelated to his previous
cancer diagnosis.
It was reported that Austin is recovering favorably, but based on doctors' advice, the secretary will resume his duties from home for an unspecified period of time before returning to his office.
According to the official text, Austin
has full access to all necessary communication systems
and classified information from his home.
