The response to criticism from the left.

The Minister of the Interior Gérald Darmanin defended this Monday evening in an interview with Ouest-France his decision to abolish land rights in Mayotte, a measure announced this weekend during a trip to the archipelago .

“It is indeed the local population who are asking the State for an end to land rights and for firmness against irregular immigration,” he said, calling on “the beautiful Parisian spirits” to leave the “peripheral” » and to go “to Mayotte”.

On the island, blockages continue in the face of “insecurity and immigration”, mainly coming from the Comoros.

According to the Minister of the Interior, migrants coming to Mayotte come to seek “protection from poverty, Islamism, political destabilization and civil wars”.

“The irregular population is equivalent to the regular population.

Very important measures must therefore be taken.

We have already taken action.

Obviously, more radical decisions are still necessary,” insisted Gérald Darmanin.

“Giving hope to Mayotte”

According to him, the abolition of land rights “will give hope to Mayotte”.

“If land rights persist, the neighboring population will continue to come in large numbers to Mayotte.

However, the Island is no longer capable of welcoming these irregular foreigners who destabilize society,” said the Minister of the Interior.

Gérald Darmanin repeated that this modification of land law would be presented “before the summer in the Council of Ministers”.

However, it will be necessary to modify the Constitution, which requires a majority of the votes of 3/5 of the deputies and senators gathered in Congress.

Gérald Darmanin says he has “no doubt” about his ability to find a political majority for this reform.

“This is common sense and the expected firmness,” he insisted.

“I’m not into ideology.

I am pragmatic.
