The announcement of the Nuremberg Zoo made waves.

Now there are new offers to take in the baboons.

Whether it will work is still unclear.

Nuremberg - In the discussion about the killing of healthy baboons, the Nuremberg Zoo is now examining new offers from facilities that want to take over the surplus monkeys.

Ultimately, however, the decision rests with the European Endangered Species Program (EEP) as to whether these offers will be considered or not, according to the zoo's statement on Monday.

The baboon group, consisting of 45 animals, is part of the EEP that normally proposes a transfer.

Nuremberg Zoo announces baboon killing: Are animals taken in somewhere else?

Last week the zoo announced that it wanted to euthanize some animals from the Guinea baboon group.

The group had become too large for the enclosure and the social structure was problematic.

According to the zoo, passing it on to other owners is not possible.

Release into the wild is also not an option as there are no suitable areas in the regions of origin.

Since then, the zoo has received three inquiries from facilities that could accommodate the baboons.

This includes the animal welfare organization Great Ape Project, which says it could take the baboons to a state-approved primate sanctuary in Great Britain.

They could be picked up in a very short time using a Europe-wide approved quarantine transport - even free of charge in an emergency, according to the organization.

Peta and Great Ape Project threaten to sue Nuremberg Zoo

The animal protection organization Peta has already threatened the Nuremberg zoo with criminal charges if those responsible actually euthanize healthy baboons.

The Great Ape Project has also announced that it will file a criminal complaint in the event of a killing.
