It was a very special birthday for Katharina Burkart, née Schmid.
On Saturday, February 10th, she celebrated her 100th birthday.
Bad Tölz – The trained nurse has been living in the “Haus am Park” senior citizens’ home in Bad Tölz for eleven years.
Tölz city councilor Ulrike Bomhard also congratulated on this extraordinary anniversary, presenting flowers on behalf of the city.
The celebration was in a small family circle.
“I never thought I would be this old,” said Katharina Burkart.
The senior looks back on a fulfilled life.
Born in Kleinweil in 1924, she began her training as a nurse in Munich-Haar at the age of 14.
She then worked at the Tölzer Hospital for more than 25 years.
She feels very connected to the spa town.
“Bad Tölz is my second home.”
Walk to the hairdresser
Despite her old age, the 100-year-old leads a relatively independent life.
“I still walk to the hairdresser or the bank with my walker,” reports the sprightly senior citizen.
When the weather is nice, she goes for short walks in the nearby spa gardens.
She also manages well in her room in the retirement home.
“I feel very comfortable and in good hands here.”

Her family is also happy that Katharina Burkart is still so physically and mentally fit.
“That’s really admirable,” says Josef Burkart.
You hardly notice her old age.
“She still has a lot of energy.” Josef Burkart is the son of her late husband.
When she married in 1979, her husband brought three children into the marriage and made the family's happiness perfect.
Regularly went on mountain tours
Despite years of physically demanding work – “as a nurse back then you still had to lift a lot” – Katharina Burkart remained active in sports until she was very old.
She regularly went on mountain tours with a group of friends, both in the Tölz area and in the Tyrolean mountains.
“The highest mountain was over 3,000 meters high,” reports the celebrant.
Unfortunately, she has already outlived most of her tour companions.
Katharina Burkart was born with a connection to nature.
During her childhood, she often went hunting for mushrooms in the forests with her father.
“He taught me how to pick mushrooms,” the 100-year-old fondly remembers of her youth.
