Cloudy weather, but no cloudy cups: at the big carnival parade in Cottbus, fools and spectators didn't let their spirits be spoiled despite the rain.
There were also appetizers for that.
Cottbus - Despite the rainy weather, thousands of people accompanied the Cottbus carnival parade on Sunday.
It is considered the largest move in East Germany.
Visitors lined the route with umbrellas in an exuberant mood to experience the merry hustle and bustle of the fools on the “Procession of Happy People”.
Like the carnival participants, many were dressed up - for example as a clown, a bee or in an animal costume.
Clubs all over the country too
Around 3,500 active participants took part in the traditional parade, including 55 clubs from Brandenburg, Berlin, Saxony-Anhalt and Saxony.
Around 100 parade floats rolled through the city center, including carnival clubs from the cities of Lausitzer Luckau, Cottbus, Spremberg, Calau and Welzow.
But fools from Mittenwalde (Dahme-Spreewald) and Teltow (Potsdam-Mittelmark) were also represented in the carnival procession.
Cucumbers for fools
The Golßen carnival club distributed cucumbers among the spectators.
The city in the Dahme-Spreewald district is known as a location for the processing of Spreewald cucumbers.
The Berlin-Brandenburg Carnival Association also rolled through the city.
Six marching bands and bands provided music.
Around 150 rescue and security forces were on duty.
Carnival participants brave the rain
Steffen Junge, President of the Lausitz Carnival Association, had previously set the parade in motion on Franz-Mehring-Straße with a “train march”.
“Basically: Bad weather never stops a carnival attendee,” he made it clear.
Even in uncertain times, a carnival like this makes people's hearts shine, Junge was convinced.
Too wet: fewer visitors
The procession led via Brandenburger Platz and Karl-Liebknecht-Straße to the Viehmarkt.
The president of the Lausitz Carnival Association (KVL) expected fewer visitors than initially expected because of the rain.
A few days ago he expected up to 70,000 people to attend, weather permitting.
New this year was the festival tent, which, at 2,500, was able to permanently accommodate twice as many people compared to the previous year.
