There is a serious pigeon problem at Weilheim train station.

“It’s too much and it stinks,” is how one commuter describes the situation.

It's hard to avoid the birds' droppings - especially since they are regularly fed right at the train station.

Weilheim

– The number of street pigeons at the Weilheim train station has “literally exploded” recently, reports train commuter Silke Franke: “While there used to be 30 to 50 pigeons,” according to her observation, “it is currently 130 to 150” – which is what the Weilheimer says documented with impressive photos in an email to the local newspaper.

Consequences of the spread: “It smells, and really perversely unpleasantly, of pigeon droppings, now from afar, in the entire station area.” The birds’ remains “make the waiting difficult for every rail passenger who takes the train despite delays, cancellations and strikes on the train,” summarizes the commuter.

“Even the handrail is covered in poop”

“You no longer know where you can stand without stepping in pigeon droppings or risking being hit from above,” is how Franke describes the situation: “Even the handrail is covered in poop.” The railway’s attempts to clean it up are counteracted does not address the “hygiene problem”.

Because the pigeons are everywhere: the additional railings and support frames that were created as a result of the – actually welcome – barrier-free renovation offer “ideal sitting and nesting places” for them.

Even the defensive spikes that are installed in places are never an obstacle for the animals for long.

At Weilheim train station, severe pollution from pigeons is currently the order of the day - for example droppings on floors and handrails.

In addition: “Someone also regularly fattens the pigeons with the finest grain mixture,” as the woman from Weilheim repeatedly notices.

The grains were “obviously scattered generously early in the morning” in the parking lot area right next to the tracks.

The railway purifies and wants to scare away

The railway is aware of the problems on site.

According to a DB spokeswoman, there are some customer complaints from Weilheim about the pigeons and their droppings.

In order to protect passengers from such harassment and to counteract the spread of pigeons, the DB spends “a high double-digit million amount” on cleaning the stations every year.

“In Weilheim, too, the platforms are cleaned intensively several times a week.”

Since their droppings “can not only contain pathogens, but can also cause costly damage to buildings,” efforts are being made to “counteract the mass occurrence of city pigeons.”

The deterrent measures - which are taken "in principle in accordance with the rules of animal protection and in coordination with the responsible veterinary office" - include "bird repellent using nets on building and construction elements, tension wire systems and spikes (particularly on passenger information systems and wayfinding systems)".

These structural measures have been implemented throughout the Weilheim train station.

Feeding birds is prohibited at the station

In order not to attract pigeons, “feeding birds is prohibited according to the house rules in Weilheim,” emphasizes the railway spokeswoman.

“With this ban, DB is addressing the cause of pigeon populations at train stations.

Because pigeons gather where they are fed.”
