On Sunday, March 10 , the long-awaited Oscar Awards
will take place
at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles.
As happens every year, after the nominations were announced, a couple of controversies arose on social networks.
This time, they all revolved around the highest-grossing movie of the year,
Barbie
.
Despite the criticism that The Academy faced for
the absence of Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig
in their respective main categories ("Best Actress" and "Best Direction"), this Tuesday the cast of
Barbie
surprised everyone, shouldering the announcement advertising the ceremony.
The promotional strategy is impeccable, especially in the midst of the scandal.
In the video we see the host of the gala, Jimmy Kimmel, getting lost in
Barbie Land
, the world of dolls.
Along with several of the film's characters,
he will have to find a way to get to the ceremony on time
.
During the almost five-minute advertising odyssey, the host immerses himself in the universes of the films nominated in the "Best Film" category in the 2024 edition of the most prestigious awards in the world of cinema.
As in the movie
Barbie
, the narrator of Kimmel's journey is
Helen Mirren
.
"Since the beginning of time, men have been lost. This is the story of one of those fools," she says at the beginning of the commercial.
The video, which was posted on Jimmy Kimmel's YouTube channel in the early hours of the morning, features the two members of the
Barbie
cast who were criticized for being nominated for the award:
Ryan Gosling
and
America Ferrera
.

In the ad, Jimmy Kimmel's journey to the Oscars begins when he arrives at the apartment of
Weird Barbie
, one of the characters in the acclaimed film, played by
Kate McKinnon
.
She will be in charge of directing him to the gala.
"You think GPS is a threat to your masculinity," the actress jokes when the host of the 96th Academy Awards confesses that he is lost.
She automatically shows him a map of hers, offering to take him back to Hollywood.
And there begins the odyssey through the different universes.
Together they go through the worlds of
Poor Creatures, Maestro,
and
Oppenheimer,
and even meet some of their protagonists, such as
Matt Damon
and
Emma Stone
.
Margot Robbie, the protagonist of Barbie, was not nominated for "Best Actress", and she did not participate in the advertising either.

Once they manage to reach Los Angeles, they appear in the middle of the awards red carpet.
That's where they meet America Ferrera, who replicates her viral monologue from the movie
Barbie
about how difficult it is to be a woman.
This time, she's talking about how complicated it is to host the Oscars.
"You have to make fun of people, but not too much. And you have to give everyone their time, but you can't spend too much time," America tells Jimmy, referring to the criticism that gala hosts often receive for their opening monologues, or by cutting thank-you speeches from the actors.
"I think what you're saying is that hosting the Oscars is harder than being a woman," Kimmel responds after Ferrera's motivational speech.
Both protagonists of
Barbie
respond that it is not like that, somewhat confused and indignant.

Finally, we can see a quick appearance by Ryan Gosling, in which he assures that it is impossible for him to take home the award this year.
Then, very confident, he says that he is sure that Greta, the director of the film, has it secured.
To his surprise,
America Ferrera tells him that Gerwig was not nominated and Gosling is stunned
.
Then, the entire cast of the advertisement begins to scream, replicating another of the iconic scenes from
Barbie
, which represents the dolls facing the unexpected.
The advertisement was very well received by the public, and is already viral on social networks, less than 12 hours after its publication.
Definitely, the organizers of the awards knew how to handle the controversy very well, and they were successful in laughing at it, along with their protagonists.
