Mazie Philip, a former Israeli, will try tonight (Wednesday) to make history and win a seat in the United States Congress, in a special election for a seat in New York.
Philip, who immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia and served in the paratroopers before moving to the United States, is running on behalf of the Republican Party against her Democratic opponent Tom Suzy.
According to the polls, the race between the two is close, with a slight advantage for Suzy.
They are running for New York's 3rd District seat, which was vacated by the December ouster of criminally entangled Republican Congressman George Santos.
Suzy held that seat from 2017 until early last year, after losing the mid-term elections to Santos.
Philip, 44 and a mother of seven, puts the immigration crisis at the center of her caffeine.
She accused Suzy of not taking care of him during his previous term in the House of Representatives.
If Democrats manage to flip this seat, Republicans' slim lead in the House will shrink even further.
"The solution is that we have to come up with a plan for how we are going to bring people to this country legally, as I came to this country, as my husband came to this country," she told CNN yesterday.
"My husband is a cardiologist. I built myself, I'm running for Congress. This country can give you this opportunity, but you have to come the right way," she added.
"Right now, the way things are going, it's not true."
Suzy could benefit from a blizzard expected in the area today that could keep voters at home, as Democrats have a lead of thousands of votes in early voting over Republicans.
He even compared Philip to Santos, saying that voters in their district "are tired of this whole George Santos thing. "She doesn't have detailed positions on the various issues.
She does not meet with the public.
She does not answer questions from the public.
It's the same," he said of his opponent.
