The Cologne Carnival actually stands for celebration, togetherness and a good mood.
But that’s not how things worked at “Schmitze Lang”, as the brewery explains.
Cologne – Cologne is considered the carnival stronghold in Germany.
Celebrations take place everywhere on the days surrounding Women's Carnival and Rose Monday.
There is a state of emergency throughout the city - but things are not always peaceful.
A traditional Cologne brewery is now reporting how bad things actually were during the carnival.

The “Schmitze Lang” brewery has been around since 1898 and has been under new management since 2020.
The brewery at Severinstraße 62 (Cologne city center district) is therefore a fixture in the brewery world and in the Cologne carnival.
But on Carnival Saturday, February 10th, there were unpleasant scenes there.
“Today was a terrible day!
We have never had as much stress and drama as today!” said the operator on Facebook.
From "disrespect and bad behavior to 'breaking into the entrance'" everything was there that day, the brewery continued.
They even had to throw out two groups - “despite the announcement about the rules that you were allowed to listen to or, better yet, had to listen to,” it continues.
“This makes us very sad and we would like to close the next carnival Saturday!”

Which is particularly shocking.
The rioters also threatened the “Schmitze Lang” team, the post continued.
“Then a group of about 30 people threaten that everyone would give a 1 star on Google, I hope they also write that they should leave because of repeated bad behavior and then they pour beer on you!
Are you really surprised that you have to go!”

Many brewery fans are also shocked by such brazen behavior at the 2024 Cologne Carnival.
“It's sad to read how some people behave and then don't blame others.
You can’t buy behavior” and “Disaster!
“You give people the opportunity to celebrate and then something like that,” it says, among other things, in the comment column.

Days later, the “Schmitze Lang” team is still stunned by the audacity - but a little more forgiving.
“We are all super excited about the five days of carnival, such a great atmosphere that we were able to experience on Thursday, Friday, Sunday and Monday, we don't talk about Saturday anymore, it's unbelievable, we, the whole Schmitz Lang team, would like to say a huge thank you thank you and are already looking forward to next year.”
However, according to Kölsch-Brauhaus, the consequences are still being discussed.
Although there is no longer any talk of a general closure, they are toying with the idea of “perhaps having an over-40 carnival party on Saturday,” it said on Facebook on Monday evening.
This means that the incidents should not be repeated next year.
