The north-facing loggia (or vestibule) of the See train station, built in 1855, marks the beginning of Maximilianstrasse.

Today it is in a neglected condition.

This space, divided by elegant columns, has the potential to be a calling card for Starnberg, its residents and visitors.

Starnberg - The architects Marco Goetz and Walter Waldrauch also think so.

Together with the citizens of Starnberg, they presented a project on the occasion of the Association of German Architects' Architecture Week A7 in summer 2022 that aims to upgrade this prominent public space.

What is missing are the financial resources.

Now the citizens are in demand!

“With just a few interventions, this place should be freed from outdated technical equipment, it should appear brighter during the day and better lit in the evening, in short: it should become visible,” explained Goetz.

The walls will be repainted in warm white.

The dark brown wooden ceiling is given a light character reminiscent of an awning by painting it with white and red stripes.

New light sources are large ball lights that provide warm light.

The loggia should be a friendly place that offers protection to the waiting traveler.

The simple, open space allows for a variety of temporary uses such as concerts, mulled wine at Christmas time or ice cream trucks in the summer.

The monument protection agency has signaled that it will give the green light for the planned interventions.

The project is scheduled to be implemented in spring 2024 and completed in the summer.

The project costs 60,000 euros

The project will be financed through donations from the citizens of Starnberg.

“The Loggia project is intended above all to be an example of the possibility of achieving improvements in Starnberg’s cityscape here and now,” emphasized Waldrauch.

Since the city of Starnberg has very little financial ability to implement such projects, the initiators Marco Goetz and Walter Waldrauch are convinced that the direct commitment of the citizens to their city is needed.

As they call it: civic projects.

The embellishment of the loggia costs 60,000 euros.

“We already have around 10,000 euros together, but unfortunately that’s not enough!” said Goetz.

With the help of donations from the citizens of Starnberg, this idea can become reality.

In order to draw attention to the campaign again, the two men hung up the large poster “It won't work without your donation” in the loggia last week.

Incidentally, he and his colleague Walter Waldrauch are overseeing the project without a fee (pro bono) out of civic commitment to Starnberg and hope that this example will set a precedent.

It was also presented to the city of Starnberg's building committee in November.
