Gender stereotypes surrounding tomcats and cats

By nature, cats and male cats have some differences that affect both their body structure and their behavior.

  • Cats have kittens and raise them.

That's why they go hunting - and often in groups.

When living with humans, they are seen as more stubborn and need more personal space.

They are skilled hunters and prefer to lie in wait for a nimble toy, such as the cat fishing rod.

  • Tomcats are more robust than cats - you can tell by their physique: they are larger and more powerfully built.

As unneutered outdoor cats, they like to wander around the area for days looking for a female cat in heat.

In doing so, they meet competitors with whom they sometimes clash.

This makes their lives riskier and reduces their life expectancy.

In the apartment, the tomcat likes to fight with other cats, but can also tolerate rough play with children.

He has a reputation for being cuddly and more voracious than his female counterpart.

On the other hand, unneutered male cats tend to mark the apartment.

This behavior stops once the sex glands are removed.

Basically, however, these descriptions are only stereotypical attributions.

A cat can also be a cuddly lap kitten or a little bully - while the tomcat may prefer to shy away.

In addition to the genetic predisposition, the decisive factor is the experience that the cat or tomcat has already had as a kitten.

If they get to know people as friends and are used to being picked up and cuddled from an early age, they will be more willing to do so later on.

There is one thing that both sexes have in common: being castrated makes them more social and sociable.

Bringing cats and tomcats together – does it work?

Cats prefer to live with at least two people.

But how do you choose a companion?

Tomcat and tomcat or better tomcat and cat?

Cats of the same gender usually get along better.

Two she-cats chase and cuddle with each other, but also give each other space.

The coexistence of a tomcat and a cat can work if both personalities are compatible.

But unpleasant dynamics quickly arise in which the more delicate cat girl is bullied: the little cat often doesn't like the wild play attacks of the boy cat.

He could also resort to defending his territory and thereby not giving her any peace.

Which cat is right for me?

Boy or girl?

So before you adopt your cat (or better: cats), you should ask yourself less questions: cat or tomcat?

The question that is much more important is: How do you live?

  • Does your tomcat have room to roam and the cat to hunt?

  • How many places to retreat does a shy animal have?

  • Are there children in the house who might treat the animal a little more roughly?

  • Do you want an animal to cuddle or would you rather have a playmate?

Finally, choose an animal that fits into your life.

Gender does play a role - but ultimately it is secondary.
