The Weilheim city council remembered an impressive preacher and deserving citizen of the city: the recently deceased Ludwig Hauck.

Weilheim – With a big “Thank you for his work in our city,” Weilheim’s city council remembered the former dean Ludwig Hauck, who died a few weeks ago, at the beginning of its most recent meeting.

The native of Upper Franconia, born in 1931, was at the head of the Protestant deanery in Weilheim for two decades from 1976 after his vicariate in Traunstein and parish positions in Oberkotzau and Augsburg.

This deanery district “was one of the largest in Bavaria at the time,” said Mayor Markus Loth in his short speech.

In addition to Weilheim-Schongau, it also included the districts of Garmisch-Partenkirchen and Landsberg as well as parts of the districts of Munich, Starnberg and Bad Tölz-Wolfratshausen - with a total of almost 75,000 Protestant believers.

He was one of the few recipients of the city's Golden Ring of Honor

For his services to the common good, Ludwig Hauck was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon.

When he retired in 1996, he was also presented with the Golden Ring of Honor from the city of Weilheim.

Hauck “did outstanding service to our city and its citizens,” said Loth in his memorial service.

During the dean's term of office, “many social institutions” were created in Weilheim and the surrounding area in cooperation with state and local authorities.

As an example, the town hall boss cited the expansion of the Evangelical Kindergarten “Am Wehr”, to whose success Hauck made a significant contribution: “The kindergarten still enjoys a high reputation today among parents who want their children to be well and reliably looked after.”

His words were remembered

Loth also recalled events in which Hauck addressed the citizens “in his usual impressive and thought-provoking words”, for example at the 750th anniversary of Weilheim in 1988 or at the German reunification in 1990. The dean was particularly concerned about the coexistence of the Protestant and Catholic Christians in Weilheim: “He spoke out tirelessly for ecumenism and celebrated numerous ecumenical services together with Catholic clergy.”

Ludwig Hauck was “valued by many people in our city, regardless of whether they belonged to the Protestant or Catholic denomination,” recalled Mayor Loth: “He was very popular because of his calm and matter-of-fact manner, but also because of his fatherly kindness.” As “An external sign of our thanks and appreciation,” the town hall boss had a wreath laid on behalf of the city of Weilheim at Hauck’s funeral at the end of January in the Weilheim cemetery.
