Mustafa Bülbül processes his escape in acrylic paintings.

They show fears and hopes.

His exhibition can be seen in Geretsried until February 27th.

Geretsried

– What escape means can only be felt by those who have experienced it themselves – like Mustafa Bülbül and his wife Sema.

In a series of acrylic pictures, the amateur artist processes his experiences, his feelings, his fears and the hope for a peaceful future in a new home.

The pictures can be seen in an exhibition in the city library.

TVJA managing director Mühlhans: “Topic that many of us don’t want to see”

At the opening, which was attended by many compatriots, Kader Gürkan Shahin supported the artist in his speech as an interpreter.

She is a volunteer helper for asylum seekers in Geretsried and established contact with the “Integration Aktiv” project run by the Geretsried Youth and Social Work Association (TVJA).

“It was very important to me to show this exhibition in this place where many people come.

It is intended to confront us with a topic that many of us do not want to see,” emphasized TVJA managing director Rudi Mühlhans.

“Escape Worlds” was first created in Germany

Around ten million of the eight billion people are currently on the run.

The Bülbül couple had to leave their Turkish hometown of Adana due to a life-threatening situation that they do not want to talk about publicly.

A good eight months ago the two came to Germany via the Balkans.

Bülbül was a car painter and caretaker in his homeland.

As an amateur artist, he painted colorful surreal images, similar to Salvador Dalí.

His new series “Escape Worlds” was first created in Germany.

They are depictions of people on the run.

For example, a child in a suitcase, one hand on the barbed wire and a young man on the side of the road, hunched over, with no view, no confidence.

“Were welcomed with kindness and tolerance”

Like many refugees, the Bülbüls have had an odyssey.

In May 2023 they arrived in Freiburg as asylum seekers, were passed on to Munich, then to Garmisch-Partenkirchen.

In July they came to the initial reception facility in the gymnasium at the Geretsried school center - a bed camp with no possibility of retreat.

Two months ago they got a room in the refugee accommodation in Eurasburg.

Nevertheless, the Bülbül couple is grateful.

“We were welcomed with kindness and tolerance.”

With his pictures, Bülbül wants to tell the stories of those who took this dangerous step and survived the escape.

He also wants to use his pictures to show that immigrants are “valuable people who would like to make their contribution to Germany.”

They are images that show hopelessness but also confidence, partly in symbolic silhouette representation, partly in naturalistic painting.
