Now a sister ship is to be built there.
Papenburg - According to the IG Metall union, the new cruise ship order for the Meyer shipyard in Papenburg is an important signal for Germany as a shipbuilding location.
“The order provides a clear perspective,” said the head of the coastal union district, Daniel Friedrich.
The construction of the as yet unnamed ship for Carnival Cruise Line, which is scheduled to be delivered in 2027, will ensure capacity utilization at the plant on the Ems.
The cruise market is slowly starting to move again, said Friedrich.
He is therefore confident that the Papenburg location and the employees there can be secured in the long term in the ongoing negotiations with the company, the state government and the works council.
The shipyard announced the new order on Tuesday evening.
The ship, powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG), is to be built as a sister ship to the Carnival Jubilee, which will be delivered in 2023.
LNG-powered ships emit less climate-damaging carbon dioxide, but more climate-damaging methane, as the Nature Conservation Association (Nabu), among others, explains.
The new cruise ship will be around 344 meters long and offer space for more than 6,400 people.
“This order is a clear sign that the cruise market has recovered and there is great demand for sea trips,” said Thomas Weigend, manager of the Meyer Group.
According to the company, the order makes a decisive contribution to securing jobs locally and at partner companies.
The order book now includes five cruise ships, a research ship and the steel construction for four substations on the high seas, so-called offshore converter platforms.
In addition to the 3,000 employees, suppliers and service providers in the region also benefit from a well-positioned Meyer shipyard, said Lower Saxony's Economics Minister Olaf Lies (SPD).
The shipyard is well positioned for the future with its order book, broad and sustainable.
It pays off that the country has repeatedly advocated for stable conditions for the company.
