In rail transport the "great forgotten is the South with old and slow regional trains, closed lines, chronic delays. The average age of the trains is 18.1 years compared to 14.6 years in the North" with two record cases of "seniority" : in Molise the average age of trains is 22.6 years, in Calabria 21.4 years.
Legambiente recalls this in the Pendolaria report which highlights that "four of the 12 worst railway lines reported in 2024 are located in the South: the excircumvesuviane, the Catania-Caltagirone-Gela, and as a new entry the Jonica line which connects Taranto and Reggio Calabria, the Adriatic line in Barletta-Trani-Bari Apulian stretch.Several lines closed or suspended such as the Palermo-Trapani via Milo closed since 2013 due to some landslides, recalls Laong.
