In Munich, a popular Lidl branch in a prime city center location is closing.

This means there will be no discount store for residents, but there is already a plan for employees.

Munich - The rumors had already been fueled some time ago.

Construction sites on Zweibrückenstraße am Isartor made it difficult for the Lidl branch to carry out deliveries without any problems.

The danger that a discount store in this central location would have to close even brought the town hall to the fore.

But now the concerns have been confirmed: Lidl is closing.

For residents, this is a cut in local supplies, as there are no other discount stores in the immediate area - only a Penny branch on Gärtnerplatz offers products in a similar price range.

Lidl is now telling our editorial team that it is closing its branch.

Lidl branch in a prime location is closing - company explains step

Residents were informed of the move with a poster at the entrance - the Lidl branch was finally closed on January 31st.

When asked, the company said that the planning of branches is generally “long-term”.

Taking “economic, social and ecological responsibility” into account, this step was ultimately decided upon.

And further: “Against this background, we continually check whether our branch locations meet our customers’ needs and ours – this also applies to our total of 46 branches in Munich.

We came to the decision to permanently close the branch at Zweibrückenstrasse 8.

The shop has already been rented out and will be converted in the next few weeks to meet the needs of the future user.”

Lidl branch in Munich closes - all 18 employees can probably continue to work at other locations

According to Lidl, this does not mean the final loss of their jobs for all employees in the closed branch.

The closure at Isartor will not result in “any jobs being lost.” Instead, all 18 colleagues have been given the opportunity to work in one of the surrounding branches with immediate effect.

For residents, this still means a cut in local supplies - it is uncertain whether a grocery store in a similar price range will move to the Isartor in the future.

The town hall is unlikely to have the issue on its desk any less as a result of the closure.
