The 48-year-old seriously injured man was taken to a clinic with head injuries, the police in Eschwege said.
For unknown reasons, his vehicle veered off the road near Sontra to the left and collided with two oncoming trucks.
One of them had loaded waste paper.
During the accident, the side wall of the truck was torn open and the load was distributed throughout the area.
In addition, a car was hit by flying debris and was slightly damaged.
In total, the police estimated the damage at around 122,500 euros.
Federal Highway 400 was completely closed.
According to the announcement, the recovery of the three trucks and the collection of the waste paper should take until late afternoon.
