More beds with an experience character: What should pimp tourism in the Miesbach district

Highlights: More beds with an experience character: What should pimp tourism in the Miesbach district. Around 2.2 million overnight stays in over 13,800 beds, 8.3 million day guests. Gross sales of 513 million euros and added value of over 255 million euros. 95 percent of the guests come from Germany. Almost half of them, 42 percent, come from Bavaria. Half of guests are over 50 years old. For some members of the IHK regional committee, this quota is a sign that the target group is aging.

Current point of contention: While the opponents are relying on a referendum against the new construction of the Schlierseer Hof, the REO recommends more hotels with an experience character.

The guest numbers for 2023 are not bad, but they have not yet overcome the Corona dent.

The REO has defined at the IHK what is needed for this in the long term.

District - Around 2.2 million overnight stays in over 13,800 beds, 8.3 million day guests, of which up to 70,000 on peak days, gross sales of 513 million euros and added value of over 255 million euros - these are the current figures for tourism in the district , which the municipal company Regionalentwicklung Oberland (REO) presented at the most recent meeting of the IHK regional committee in Irschenberg.

Remarkable: This means that tourism creates a total of around 6,600 full-time jobs in the district.

Despite these numbers, the tourism industry is not on optimal track.

This was stated by REO tourism board member Harald Gmeiner.

His conclusion with a view to the future of this important industry: “We need more beds.” If you look at the entire year, most guests come in summer.

What is also noticeable, according to Gmeiner, is that in 2023 the number of overnight stays has not yet reached the level of 2019.

In other words: There is apparently still a Corona dent in the district.

Problem of aging?

About the numbers: Hotels account for 38 percent of overnight stays.

95 percent of the guests come from Germany.

Almost half of them, 42 percent, come from Bavaria.

Half of the guests are over 50 years old.

For some members of the IHK regional committee, this quota is a sign that the target group is aging.

This raised the question of what could be done to be attractive to younger target groups.

Day guests don't bring enough

In view of the figures presented, REO board member Alexander Schmid, as chairman of the committee, stated that “the development in tourism is not getting anywhere.”

“The added value from day guests is comparatively low.” Therefore, more needs to happen with overnight stays.

But the number of guest beds in hotels in particular has been stagnating for years.

“This could be an important reason why the district ranks last in Upper Bavaria when it comes to the development of guest arrivals,” says Schmid.

The committee members agreed that the future development of tourism also requires development in the hotel sector.

“Hotels are statistically the most popular accommodation and – if they want to compete – they have to become part of the holiday experience,” added Gmeiner.

The district needs more hotels with good individual concepts and an experience.

Schlierseer Hof as an opportunity

And that influences the size of the hotel, “if it wants to offer experiences,” says Gmeiner.

It was clear that the new building plans for the Schlierseer Hof were also an issue in this context.

“We need tourism in the district,” emphasized Schmid.

“It is an important source of income for our communities; thousands of people live from it.” Therefore, the willingness to invest in this area “always needs to be viewed positively”.

Optimism in the Tegernsee Valley

On the other hand, there is optimism at Tegernsee, where the current figures for the Tegernsee Valley have also just been presented (we reported).

The proportions of groups aged 0 to 18 and 18 to 65 have clearly increased, while the proportion of guests over 65 has fallen to less than 25 percent.

The valley-wide overnight stays climbed by 3.96 percent compared to the previous year to 1.46 million in 2023. They are distributed as follows: Bad Wiessee 39 percent, Rottach-Egern 25 percent, Tegernsee 16 percent, Kreuth 15 percent and Gmund five percent.

The number of guests rose by 7.37 percent from 329,477 to 353,765.
