The number of aesthetic procedures is increasing.

The plastic surgeons feel this.

The Munich surgeon Dr.

Stefan Schmiedl explains why this is so.

Munich – High risks or too much artificiality: These are just two reasons why aesthetic operations were often frowned upon in society.

Nowadays they still are to some extent, but not as much as they used to be - they have become somewhat “normal”.

This is noticeable in the total number of procedures published by the Association of German Aesthetic-Plastic Surgeons.

The number increased by five percent in 2022 compared to 2021 and totaled 98,548 procedures.

This trend is not only noticed by the association, but also by the plastic surgeons themselves. Dr.

Stefan Schmiedl is one of them and carries out many types of aesthetic procedures in his practice in Munich.

He sees that cosmetic surgery has become normal for people and gives a reason for this.

“These are now safe, reproducible and routinely performed procedures and not exotic, risky things,” he explains in an interview with our editorial team.

According to him, which ones are particularly in demand, whether surgical or minimally invasive (with the smallest injury to the skin and soft tissue), varies greatly.

“Interestingly, I notice that there are always waves in which some interventions are particularly common.

“Even after many years of professional experience, I can’t say what these waves depend on,” he says.

For example, he is currently doing a lot of corrections to the upper and lower eyelids.

Cosmetic surgeries in Munich: Men are having more and more treatments

His clientele consists predominantly of women, 20 to 30 percent are men.

According to Schmiedl, the latter are “actually on the rise and much more open to the topic than they were a few years ago.”

It is important for the doctor to see the person as a whole and that no patient has to justify or even be ashamed of their wishes or ideas.

However, it sometimes happens that he refuses interventions.

For example, some of the requested changes would not be consistent with the actual goal, or the best possible technical result would not be commensurate with the necessary effort in terms of time, costs, inconvenience and possible risk.

The final decisive criterion for Schmiedl is whether the procedure would increase well-being and quality of life or would be detrimental.

“I work this out with my patients and am completely honest and straightforward about it.

If these aspects don’t fit, then I refuse to intervene.”

Aesthetic surgeries: Munich is considered a center for cosmetic procedures

According to the surgeon, Munich in particular is considered a center for cosmetic procedures compared to other large cities and regions in Germany.

He sees two reasons for this.

“Munich is, so to speak, a founding center for plastic surgery in Germany.

It was launched and established here after the Second World War,” he says.

“From this, several large clinics have developed in which in-depth, modern training was possible and which numerous colleagues have passed through.

As a result, plastic surgery has been firmly rooted in Munich for many decades.

This long tradition is often missing in other cities.”

Another reason for Stefan Schmiedl is that the basic standards in Munich are significantly higher than in other regions.

“This also simply includes a certain attitude to life and a certain quality of life.

And plastic surgery and cosmetic procedures make a significant contribution to quality of life in particular.”

Botox treatment is like professional teeth cleaning: plastic surgeon draws comparison

Of course, these also include Botox treatments, which Schmiedl likes to compare to professional teeth cleaning with his patients.

In his experience, the aging process on the face can be stopped or even reversed with these minimally invasive measures.

The only requirement is that the treatment begins before aging has progressed too far and that it is done regularly.

And that is comparable to having your teeth cleaned.

“Because if you do it regularly, your teeth will stay pretty healthy and you won’t need any third teeth,” he says.

Especially before the Oktoberfest, some people want to go to the beauty doctor again.
