For Valentine's Day, people from the Munich district explain which gestures have touched their hearts - from heart cookies to support in the hardest moments.

District - For some it is a marketing coup by the floristry industry, for others today is the celebration of love.

Valentine's Day.

And because the world is good for a little more romance, we asked around in the Munich district: What was your most beautiful declaration of love?

“We also function in crises”: Renate Haidinger.

Renate Haidinger, chairwoman of the “Breast Cancer Germany” association from Hohenbrunn:

“After my cancer diagnosis, my husband said to me: 'I will always stand by you, no matter what you decide.

Because I love you.'

I burst into tears and told him, 'I love you too.'

Now I knew that he would support me and accompany me on my long journey.

My family grew together during my illness.

This is not a given.

Couples separate, families tear apart.

My sons, my husband and I still have a close relationship to this day.

This is the most beautiful gift I have ever received.

It showed me that we function even in crises.”

Sonja Dirl, district farmer from Heimstetten:

“I bake heart cookies for my husband Sepp on Valentine’s Day.

This has become a tradition.

We've been married for 34 years and I've probably been baking cookies for 30 years.

Every now and then my husband gives me a little something or writes me a letter, which always makes me happy.

In general, Valentine’s Day is not a special day that we celebrate.”

“He has my back”: Claudia Köhler and husband Christian.

Claudia Köhler, member of the state parliament from Unterhaching:

“The most beautiful declaration of love comes from my family, my four men, who always support me in all my commitment, are there and ground me with honest feedback.

Especially from my husband Christian, who has supported my ideas for almost 40 years, has my back and spoils me with wonderful dishes almost every day.

I can still remember the marriage proposal 30 years ago, but it came as a surprise.

I came home from a fire department marching band performance, everything was spotless in our little apartment in Giesing, flowers in the vase and then something like that.”

Maximilian Böltl, member of the state parliament from Kirchheim:

“The most beautiful proof of love was of course his yes word in the registry office and in the church in 2022. But the power of love is best felt in everyday life.

When you perceive each other's needs before they are expressed.

Or when you get involved in interests that are not your own preferences.

For example, he accompanies me jogging and I accompany him to the museum.

Tom is my haven of calm and my source of strength.”

Deniz Dadli, 54, head of the Planet “O” youth leisure center from Oberschleißheim:

“I have been running the youth center in Oberschleißheim for 25 years.

Again and again I receive small declarations of gratitude from children and young people.

Chocolate, cakes and perfumes.

I was particularly happy to see photos from our trip to Turkey last year.

I once received a card that said, 'Glad you exist.'

These small gestures show me that the children value me.

I always have an open ear.

I help them with problems with their parents, looking for a job and bad grades.

You don't have to fight alone.

Of course the kids are growing on me too.”

“Spontaneous gestures are the most beautiful”: Brigitte Dreilich.

Brigitte Dreilich, tour guide for singles groups from Unterhaching:

“Nothing against February 14th, but for me it doesn’t have that much meaning.

It's important to me that I feel appreciated all year round.

Spontaneous declarations of love are the most beautiful.

When my husband hugs me for no reason and says I love you so much, or when he hugs me and says I don't want to lose you anymore.

Or when he just gives me flowers.

When it comes to declarations of love, I have to honestly say that men can't talk that much about love anyway; we women find it much easier to express our feelings.
