Despite massive criticism, a street in Allersberg was named after an ex-SA member.

The community is now planning a historical reappraisal.

Allersberg - Despite strong criticism, street signs with the name of a former SA member were put up in Allersberg.

“The street has been called that since 2021,” informed Daniel Horndasch, the municipality’s non-partisan first mayor, on Tuesday, February 13th.

“The installation of the signs on site, like other final development measures, is simply part of the remaining work in the new development area, to which the residents also have a right.” Various media had previously reported on the activities of the municipal building yard.

According to current information, Wilhelm Burkhardt, who was briefly mayor of Allersberg in 1945, was a member of the violent storm troop SA during the Nazi era.

When the decision for the street name was made, the community in the Roth district was not aware of this, according to Horndasch's previous statements.

Burkhardt stood up for the community in a difficult phase, Horndasch explained to several media outlets last year, which reported, among other things, criticism within the community and from the state government's anti-Semitism commissioner, Ludwig Spaenle (CSU).

By installing the street signs, the administration has now implemented a resolution of the local council.

“The local council will make a decision about the renaming as soon as the results of the approved report are available,” said Horndasch.

The community in Middle Franconia would like to use an expertise to examine the history of Burkhardt during the Nazi era and that of the community.

It is not yet clear when the report will be ready.
