Mazie Philip, the former Israeli who ran on behalf of the Republican Party in the elections for the New York state seat in the US Congress, lost tonight (Wednesday) to her Democratic opponent, former congressman Tom Suzy.
In the wake of Suzy's victory, the slim advantage of the Republicans in the House of Representatives will be further reduced.
The two were running for a seat in New York's 3rd District, which was vacated by the December ouster of Republican congressman George Santos, who was involved in crimes.
Suzy held that seat from 2017 until early last year, after losing the mid-term elections to Santos.
Philip, 44, a mother of seven, immigrated to Israel from Ethiopia and served in the paratroopers before moving to the United States.
She put the immigration crisis at the center of her caffeine, accusing Suzy of not taking care of it during his previous term in the House of Representatives.

"The solution is that we have to come up with a plan for how we are going to bring people to this country legally, as I came to this country, as my husband came to this country," she told CNN yesterday.
"My husband is a cardiologist. I built myself, I'm running for Congress. This country can give you this opportunity, but you have to come the right way," she added.
"Right now, the way things are going, it's not true."
On the other hand, Suzy compared Philip to Santos, saying that the voters in their district "are tired of this whole George Santos thing."
He added: "She doesn't have detailed positions regarding the various issues. She doesn't meet with the public. She doesn't answer questions from the public. It's the same thing," he said of his opponent.
