On February 7, a boat capsized and was swept away by the current off the southern coast of Togado Island in Trinidad and Tobago.
Along the way, it released a significant amount of oil into the ocean.
More than a week after the incident, authorities have not been able to discover the origin, owners or route of the damaged vessel.
The Government has said it awaits further evidence to determine the exact nature of the ship's contents.
So far not much is known about the environmental impact on the island, although nearby communities have reported a persistent foul odor.
No details have been given regarding the estimated amount of oil, although it is known that at least 15 kilometers of the coast are affected.
