Safety at the holiday destination plays a major role for many travelers.

A crime index provides information about crime in various cities across Europe.

In which cities in Europe do people generally feel uncomfortable?

Where do locals and tourists not like going out on the streets at night or have to fear break-ins and pickpocketing?

This is regularly determined by the crime index of the global database Numbeo.

It summarizes data from online surveys from over 100,000 participants from around the world who provided information about crime and crimes in a respective city.

The latest crime index for 2024 has now been published.

People feel most unsafe in the French city of Marseille

The southern French port city of Marseille is ranked first among the most dangerous cities in Europe.

Last year it was in second place. The crime index here is 65.2, which indicates a high crime rate.

Respondents generally rate local crime as high and have the impression that it has increased in the last three years.

There is a great fear of both muggings and car thefts.

This sentiment is consistent with recent reports on Marseille, which show that drug and gang crime in France's second largest city has increased dramatically over the past year.

In 2023 alone, 49 people died in connection with the drug environment, as the

Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung

reports.

Many of them were young people.

According to a report by ZDFheute,

especially in the north of the city, Quartier Nord, there are

frequent shootings in which even bystanders are not spared.

In addition to Marseille, respondents also rated the crime rate in Coventry (Crime Index: 65.0) and Birmingham (63.6) as high, both of which are in the United Kingdom.

In Coventry, people are afraid of home break-ins and being robbed, while in Birmingham there is also a great fear of being attacked and insulted.

In Numbeo's Crime Index, a value between 60 and 80 indicates a high crime rate, a value of 40 to 60 indicates a moderate crime rate and a value of 20 to 40 indicates a low crime rate.

The “most dangerous” German city in the ranking is Frankfurt in 41st place.

The crime index is at a moderate level with a value of 46.3.

Respondents here consider drug use to be particularly dangerous - this could mean the drug scene in the Bahnhofsviertel, which has been a problem for decades.

The survey participants also have the impression that crime in Frankfurt has increased in the last three years.

However, compared to other countries around the world, people in European cities feel significantly safer than elsewhere.

The Venezuelan capital Caracas is considered the most dangerous city with a score of 82.

This is followed by the South African cities of Pretoria (81.8) and Durban (81).

Marseille is the first European city to appear in the global ranking at number 40.

Crime Index is based on subjective opinion

When it comes to the Crime Index, it should be noted that the data is the subjective feeling of those surveyed - this is also pointed out by Numbeo itself.

Official data on crime in cities would not be used for the evaluation because it would be difficult to compare them.

“In some countries people are much more likely to report a crime than in other countries.

Data could be falsified by government institutions and data is not available for most of the world,” it said.
