Bujji Aamma, a 52-year-old Indian woman who had been declared dead, woke up on Monday February 12 in her coffin just before her body was cremated, as reported by the
Times of India
.
Following a tragic fire in her house on February 1, this woman from Brahmapur, on the east coast of India, suffered serious burns, covering 50% of her body, and was admitted to hospital to receive care.
“We thought she was dead”
Lacking financial means to pay for her hospitalization costs, her family was forced to take her home despite the seriousness of her condition.
As the days passed, her health deteriorated until she stopped breathing, as her husband explained to the
Times of India
.
“We thought she had died and contacted other local residents to organize a funeral procession and transport the body to the cremation site
,” he said.
When preparations were almost complete for setting up the funeral pyre, a person present at the back of the hearse carrying Bujji Aamma's body suddenly noticed that she was waking up.
“At first, we were scared because we had never witnessed such a situation, even if we had already heard similar stories
,” he reported to the Indian media.
The hearse driver was alerted and immediately took Bujji Aamma home in the same vehicle.
As per crematorium practices, it is not mandatory for Indians to provide an official death certificate to perform the last rites in memory of a family member.
