Microsoft wants to expand its artificial intelligence applications in Germany, and the Rhenish district is moving into focus.
An investment worth billions is pending.
Berlin/Düsseldorf - Over the next two years, Microsoft will build data centers for artificial intelligence (AI) applications and cloud computing in the Rheinisches Revier west of Cologne.
The management of the US group announced on Thursday in Berlin an investment worth almost 3.3 billion euros in Germany, most of which will flow to North Rhine-Westphalia within two years.
The other part goes to the Frankfurt (Hesse) area.
Microsoft did not provide any further details.
With a view to the Rhenish district, Microsoft Germany boss Marianne Janik said that one could be part of regional development there and use a functioning ecosystem.
How many jobs will be created was not stated.
Microsoft boss Brad Smith said that only a “small number” of people would be needed to operate the data centers.
On the one hand, there is a great need for personnel for the upcoming construction work.
On the other hand, the greatest job growth occurs as a result of the use of artificial intelligence applications in the economy made possible by the systems.
