In June, an American is said to have pushed two students into the Pöllat Gorge near Neuschwanstein Castle.

He will be tried starting Monday.

Kempten / Schwangau – The encounter that cost 21-year-old Eva L. her life was probably purely coincidental.

If she and her companion Kelsey C. hadn't slipped on a steep stretch of path above the Marienbrücke near Neuschwanstein Castle that early afternoon on June 14th last year, she might never have gotten into conversation with Troy Phillip B..

But all three started the journey back towards Marienbrücke together.

However, the two Americans were never supposed to get there.

The Neuschwanstein trial begins on Monday at the Kempten regional court: murder charges against Americans

According to the Kempten public prosecutor's office, Troy B., then 30 years old - also an American and from the state of Michigan - attacked Eva L. on the way with the intention of first strangling her and then raping her.

He pushed Kelsey C. (22), who came to her aid, down a steep slope.

When B. was again disturbed by passing witnesses while raping L., he also pushed the already unconscious woman over the edge of the steep slope and pushed her down about 50 meters.

Despite rescue measures being taken immediately, the young woman succumbed to her serious injuries in hospital that night.

Her friend Kelsey C., however, survived the fall with relatively minor injuries.

The public prosecutor's office has therefore charged the now 31-year-old with murder, rape resulting in death, attempted murder in conjunction with dangerous bodily harm and possession of child pornography.

From next Monday, February 19th, he will have to answer before the Kempten regional court.

The investigators are convinced that B. wanted to kill the student for base reasons.

According to authorities, the defendant himself remains silent about the allegations.

It is currently unclear whether he will speak out in court.

It is known that he has a three-person defense team at his side.

The main defender is said to be the Munich lawyer Alexander Stevens, who has already represented several celebrities in spectacular cases in court.

Numerous media representatives and spectators are expected at the start of the trial.

The court has therefore already carried out an accreditation process for journalists in advance.

Strict safety requirements and rules of conduct apply to the remaining listeners.

Six days of negotiations are initially scheduled.

A verdict is expected on March 13th.
