If you don't want to cast your vote at the polling stations in the federal election, you can also do so by postal vote: But why does the ballot paper often not fit in the envelope?
Berlin/Munich – The next federal election is scheduled for September 2025.
Many voters are already wondering which party they should vote for?
One way to vote is by postal vote in the federal election.
Those who vote by mail often ask themselves whether the ballot paper will arrive on time - or why the ballot paper doesn't fit into the ballot envelope.
Here is the answer to the latter question.
Postal voting for the 2025 federal election: size of ballot papers and envelopes regulated by law
In fact, the length of the ballot paper is different in each of the 299 constituencies in Germany.
The size depends on the number of election proposals: “Depending on the length, it may be that the ballot papers are folded several times or have to be folded several times in order to fit into the ballot envelope,” revealed the Federal Returning Officer when asked by

in 2021 .

The size of the ballot paper and also the ballot envelope is regulated in the federal electoral regulations, which in turn are based on the specifications of the Federal Ministry of the Interior: Section 45 paragraph 1 stipulates that “the ballot paper must be at least 21 x 29.7 cm (DIN A4) in size.”
According to the Federal Returning Officer, the following standards apply to the dimensions of the ballot envelopes:
The blue ballot envelopes should be 11.4 x 16.2 centimeters (DIN C6).
The red ballot envelopes should be approximately 12 x 17.6 centimeters in size.
Incidentally, the longest ballot paper in Germany was issued for the 2017 federal election in the Berlin-Friedrichshain-Kreuzberg/Prenzlauer Berg Ost constituency - this contained 27 state list proposals and 7 non-party direct candidates.

Federal elections are due in 2025
Before the 2021 federal election, experts assumed that the number of postal voters would increase massively due to the corona pandemic.
Four years later, in the 2025 federal election, it remains to be seen to what extent experts assume this will happen again.
Following the federal election in 2021, it was announced that a total of 28.6 percent of voters had cast their votes by postal vote.
