In Riem, a company wants to make parts of the listed old spectator stand tangible - like in a kind of cinema.
With a peephole.
The old grandstand at the former Riem Airport is to be given new life.
At least part of the listed building, which is in danger of collapsing, can be experienced with a peephole and light and video installations inside.
You used to be able to watch planes taking off and landing
The “Zeppelin spectator stand”, also known as the old airport stand, has already seen a lot: once you could watch the planes taking off and landing at the old Munich Riem Airport and dream of long-distance travel. Then underneath there was a negative pressure chamber in which the luggage of Israel travelers were checked, later a bunker and, after the airport was moved, a police material storage facility and a legendary mushroom farm.
The grandstand has been a listed building since 1995 because the arched vault from 1939 is unique in its design and size.
Part of the interior should now be made tangible.

Originally it was two kilometers long, but today only about 500 meters remain.
And many of them are in danger of collapsing, also due to war damage.
The outdoor areas are now biotope areas worthy of protection; parts of the building are completely rooted.
A complete preservation would be very expensive.
Peephole is intended to provide insights into inaccessible space
The Munich spatial development company MRG has now developed a charming idea to make at least part of the grandstand tangible again.
The north end should be shortened slightly and straightened so that the “unsightly edge in the middle of Werner-Eckert-Straße” disappears.
“We want to give the whole thing a face,” explains MRG project manager Helga Engel.
In addition, the new side wall should be provided with a kind of peephole.
Light or video installations inside are intended to create insights into an otherwise inaccessible space.
Other presentations could also be played here.
“Like in a kind of cinema.” On the new square in front, documentation boards will tell the history of the grandstand structure.
“With a little imagination, you can still hear the planes from the former airport,” says Engel.
Overall, the grandstand should be integrated more into the environment between the school campus, Riemer Park and residential development.
Monument protection supports the design.
Together with the green areas of the new sports park, the new north end of the stand is scheduled to be completed this year.
