The Union is divided when it comes to the idea of a black-green federal government.
North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Wüst is now accusing Söder of being backwards.
Düsseldorf – “Black-green has a lot of potential,” said North Rhine-Westphalia’s Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) on Thursday in Düsseldorf.
The CDU and the Greens are already working together in several federal states; it has long been a political “avant-garde project” to combine climate protection and a connection to nature with conservative politics.
With this statement, Wüst is clearly positioning himself against Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder (CSU).
“Anyone who is still having debates today about whether this is fundamentally possible and whether it is within the realm of conceivability is, in my firm opinion, having debates from the 1990s, especially in these times,” he said, according to

Wüst can well imagine a black-green federal government; we can see in the federal states that it works.
The CDU and the Greens govern together in both Baden-Württemberg and Schleswig-Holstein.
Since 2022, Wüst has also led the black-green coalition in North Rhine-Westphalia - the most populous state in Germany.
Söder shows no understanding of coalition with the Greens
For the CDU politician, the bridge between the two parties is also an effective weapon against right-wing extremism and the polarization of society.
Democratic parties must remain able to discuss conflicts in government and opposition.
“That applies here in Düsseldorf.
However, this also applies in Berlin, which requires effort.”
CSU boss Söder sees it differently.
At the political Ash Wednesday in Regensburg, Söder once again rejected a coalition with the Greens.
The Greens are not capable of governing either in the federal government or in Bavaria.
Söder's statements were met with incomprehension by Wüst.
It can only be based on the fact that Söder cannot imagine “how good it is to work with a reliable partner”.
CDU-Greens fraternization at political Ash Wednesday?
The question of a black-green federal government repeatedly leads to discussions within the Union.
CDU leader Friedrich Merz recently expressed himself positively about the political solidarity at the CDU Thuringia's political Ash Wednesday, after he had categorically ruled out a coalition with the Greens a few months ago.
“We will do a damn thing to close off all options and thus take away any room for maneuver,” said Merz to Carnival in Apolda.
