After around two and a half years, Klostergut Schlehdorf eG has completed its largest project to date: the entire purchase of the space has been completed.

All payments for the Karpfsee and the surrounding agricultural areas have been made.

Now there is space for new projects.

Schlehdorf – The Klostergut Schlehdorf eco-cooperative has been managing the former agricultural properties of the Missionary Dominican Sisters since 2012.

In addition to the farm located directly at the monastery, which the cooperative bought at the end of 2020, these assets also include 45 hectares of grassland around Lake Karpf and around ten hectares of lake and swamp area, according to Manfred Gassner, one of the cooperative's three board members.

The last installment has been paid

The cooperative paid the purchase price for the grassland of around 2.75 million euros in full in several installments as early as 2022, said Gassner.

The last installment for the purchase of the Karpfsee was recently paid.

A purchase price of 100,000 euros was agreed for the body of water at the beginning of last year, but this was not payable immediately.

As reported, the cooperative had agreed with the Mission Dominican Sisters that the purchase price would not be due until the end of 2023.

This was also adhered to, says Gassner, not without pride.

The purchase of the entire area was only possible thanks to the enormous community effort.

“The core element of the financing was solidarity-based financing,” explains Gassner.

Around 80 people – all members of the cooperative – made their money available for this purpose.

These “long-term member loans” amounting to around 1.1 million euros were viewed by the bank as equity.

The second main pillar of financing was a bank loan.

Purchase was only possible with the help of private individuals

“The acquisition of the 55 hectare area was the biggest challenge for our cooperative to date,” says a circular to the cooperative members.

The purchase, with a total volume of 2.85 million euros, was only possible with the help of “fantastic support from more than 80 committed private individuals”.

“We are overjoyed and proud.

Our huge thank you goes out to all of our supporters.”

Concept for the future use of agricultural land

And what happens now?

“There will definitely be new projects,” says Gassner.

The next step is to develop a concept for the future use of agricultural land, in which the long-term orientation is determined in terms of content.

The cooperative is particularly concerned about nature and species protection.

As Gassner said around a year ago, the plan was to use the lake and its shore areas with the animal and plant species that live here, some of which are rare or endangered, “for environmental education offerings within a nature conservation-friendly framework”.

For the lake itself, “gentle fishing” would be an option to ensure a healthy nutrient cycle.

The cooperative wants to “protect the land surrounding the lake from speculation and preserve it in the long term”.

The existing regenerative agriculture should be expanded.

This process has already started, said Gassner.

Among other things, the herd of Murnau-Werdenfelser cattle – one of the oldest cattle breeds in the world, according to the German Nature Conservation Association (Nabu) – has already grown.

However, a large agricultural operation will “never” be built on the site.
