Pumpkin is enjoyed all year round since
it is a very versatile vegetable
.
But
in summer it is at a good price and you can get vigorous specimens
.
Participates in pie and empanada fillings;
Baked in cubes, it is used for warm salads;
It is the base for creamy soups and, when the cold sets in, it adds its orange color to stews and pot meals.
It provides very few calories
, only 26 per hundred grams of product.
That is why its consumption is usually indicated in low-calorie menus since it is relatively low in carbohydrates.
Another advantage of consuming this vegetable is that the skin, if cooked in the oven, is crispy and can be eaten, as can
the seeds
.
The latter are washed and browned in a pan.
They serve to add crunch to salads and if you add a little sea salt, they become a healthy and economical snack.
There are
different styles of pumpkin
, the sweetest being the one with
brindle skin whose interior is an intense orange color
.
When purchasing it, you must check that the skin is not damaged.
In summer,
your skin should be soft and shiny
.
On the other hand, if it is a winter squash, you should choose the heaviest ones (in relation to its size) that have a somewhat thicker and somewhat rough skin.
