A hailstorm in the first summer, bumpy location planning: Tegernseer Energiegesellschaft's electric car rental model “eSeeShare” didn't get off to an easy start.

But it's picking up speed.

Locals in particular use the fleet, but demand from guests is still muted.

Tegernsee Valley

- The name of the electric car rental company on Tegernsee is aimed at an international audience who enjoys wordplay: “eSeeShare” should sound “easy” and make you want to get an electric car on Lake Tegernsee lend.

The cooperation partner is Tegernseer Tal Tourismus GmbH (TTT), which is keen to ensure that guests arrive by train and rent an environmentally friendly car on site.

The Tegernseer Energiegesellschaft (TEG) is responsible for infrastructure and operations.

“e-SeeShare” was launched in May 2023, with six electric cars at five locations in the Tegernsee Valley.

Florian Appel, project manager at TEG, has now presented an initial balance sheet.

He is optimistic: “I'm happy with how things are going.” But it wasn't easy.

And so far the model has been popular with locals, rather than with guests from abroad.

Most users come from the Tegernsee Valley

The fleet covered 41,300 kilometers from the start to the end of the year, and the electric cars were on the road for 7,700 hours on 616 trips.

The number of drivers who booked themselves via “E-See-Share” was 457 at the end of January. The cars were also used by 91 employees of the municipalities, the TTT and the E-Werk.

Most of the 548 drivers, namely 280, are at home in the Tegernsee Valley.

40 live in the Miesbach district - but outside the valley - and 100 in Bavaria.

119 come from the rest of Germany, nine live abroad.

There is little use of TegernseeCard services

“The locals ensure capacity utilization,” states Appel.

And this despite the fact that holidaymakers with a TegernseeCard are allowed to use the speedsters free of charge for two hours per week of their stay.

So far, this service has only been used cautiously.

“We would have expected more,” says Appel.

Especially since the cars can be easily booked over a year in advance using the MOQO app.

The TTT now wants to draw more attention to the offer, Appel reports on the results of a conversation with the tourism experts.

Another goal is to win hotel operators as so-called anchor customers.

So for setting up new eSeeShare locations with rental vehicles and charging stations.

Appel knows that vehicle density is the key to making the rental model more attractive.

If the network is thin, the fear that there won't be a car when you need it dominates.

Fleet is constantly growing

The fleet has grown slightly since the launch.

It currently consists of eight vehicles at six locations.

The next car, a BMW iX1, has already been ordered.

From August 1st it will be parked in front of the Wiessee town hall.

Also in the planning stages are locations at the Miesbach district office, at the Wiesenbach residential area in Kreuth - where E-Werk Tegernsee is building 16 apartments - and at the Schaftlach train station and in the Waakirchner town center.

In Waakirchen: Location at the new town hall in view

The TEG would have wanted to place a vehicle in the Waakirchner center by the end of 2023.

But the city hall planning, which was being carried out at full steam, slowed down implementation.

In consultation with the municipal company Wohnbaugesellschaft Waakirchen, they are waiting to determine the location, reports Appel.

It would be ideal to win the town hall as an anchor customer.

TEG could put the VW e-up, which had already been delivered to Waakirchen, to good use: it serves as a replacement car for vehicles that are gradually being restored to perfect condition after the hailstorm in August.

As reported, five of the E-See-Share cars were so badly damaged that they were no longer roadworthy.

“That literally ruined our business,” says Appel.

Lengthy repairs after hail damage

In order to get the demolished cars ready for use again quickly, only makeshift repairs were initially carried out.

Only now are all the dents being smoothed out, step by step.

The e-up would then be ready for use in the community of Waakirchen.

A location could also be built at Schaftlach train station this year.

With the Tegernsee Bahn as the owner, a suitable location has been identified, reports Appel.

Once the technical viability has been determined, you can get started: “We have the okay.”
