Highlights: The witness who accused the Bidens of corruption in Ukraine is charged with false testimony. The prosecutor accuses him of artificially fabricating the scandal for which the Republicans are investigating the president. There was no evidence to support the claims of that confidential source. Despite this, Republicans have summoned Hunter Biden in the House of Representatives and have voted to open an investigation for a possible impeachment against the president, writes Julian Zelizer. The special counsel's accusation dismantles the main testimony against Joe Biden, Zelizer says.

The accuser, accused.

Special prosecutor David Weiss, in charge of investigating Hunter Biden, son of President Joe Biden, has filed charges of false testimony and obstruction of justice against a witness who acted as a confidential source for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) with statements against the Bidens.

This supposedly false testimony is what has served Republicans for years to accuse Joe Biden of corruption without evidence and what led them to open an investigation against the president for a possible political process

(impeachment).

Weiss is the prosecutor who has accused Hunter Biden of the alleged illegal purchase and possession of a weapon and alleged tax crimes.

Now, however, he accuses Alexander Smirnov, 43, in connection with statements he made to the FBI about Hunter Biden's business dealings in Ukraine, trying to link them to his father, the president.

There was no evidence to support the claims of that confidential source.

Despite this, Republicans have summoned Hunter Biden in the House of Representatives and have voted to open an investigation for a possible impeachment

against

the president.

The Bidens are not mentioned by name in the statement of charges presented by the special prosecutor, but there is no doubt about it.

It is noted that this is a former confidential source who gave the FBI false information in 2020 “about a prominent political figure and his son.”

With that and other even more explicit mentions in the 37-page statement of objections, it is clear who he is referring to.

“Despite repeated admonitions to provide truthful information to the FBI and not to fabricate evidence, the defendant provided false disparaging information to the FBI about Public Official 1, an elected official of the Obama-Biden Administration who left office. in January 2017, and Businessman 1, the son of Public Official 1, in 2020, after Public Official 1 became a candidate for the Presidency of the United States of America,” the document says.

The special counsel's accusation dismantles the main testimony against Joe Biden.

The prosecutor says that the defendant transformed his routine and non-extraordinary business contacts with the Ukrainian company Burisma into baseless bribery accusations against Joe Biden.

The now accused was changing his version of events, entering into contradictions and lying to artificially fabricate a scandal against Biden.

This person accused of false testimony is the one Republicans have been grasping at like a straw to try to accuse Biden of corruption for years.

They have issued summonses and requests, they have taken statements from witnesses and despite their insistence, they still have not found evidence of what they are looking for.

His case against Biden now suffers a serious blow.
