They mistake a false publication for a message from Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez

2024-02-15T05:40:45.856Z

Highlights: They mistake a false publication for a message from Congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez. The message is not real, as it was published by an account that seeks to impersonate the identity of Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocsey. The false claim refers to the Russian president's interview with Carlson on February 8 – the leader's first interview with an American journalist since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022. Putin told Carlson that Russia has failed to achieve its war goals in its widely condemned invasion of neighboring Ukraine, and began the interview with a 20-minute history speech.

The message is not real, as it was published by an account that seeks to impersonate the identity of Democratic Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and refers to the interview that presenter Tucker Carlson did with Vladimir Putin.

A fake account on the social network

It bears the name and photo of the congresswoman and on February 8 she published the following phrase: “If you watch Tucker Carlson's interview with Putin today, you are a white supremacist.”

But everything is false, both the account and the message.

Ocasio-Cortez never said that.

Although the user is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Press Release (parody) and the

handle

is @AOCpressTwo, several people assumed that it was a real statement.

“Wow!

Vote to get AOC out of NY,” responded a user on X.

“If you don't watch @TuckerCarlson's interview tonight, you're a brown supremacist!!,” responded another user, while many others claimed they had new reasons to watch the show.

Also on Facebook, some users shared the

post

as if it were a statement from Ocasio-Cortez, despite it not being real.

As of February 14, the fake post had more than 865,000 views on X.

The false claim

refers to the Russian president's two-hour interview with Carlson on February 8 – the leader's first interview with an American journalist since the Russian invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Putin told Carlson that Russia has failed to achieve its war goals in its widely condemned invasion of neighboring Ukraine, and began the interview with a 20-minute, nearly uninterrupted history speech that focused on the days of Catherine the Great. Grande, Empress of Russia from 1762 to 1796.

At one point, Carlson complimented Putin and said he wasn't boring, but added, "I don't know why it's relevant."

NBC News has not received details about the circumstances under which the interview was recorded.

Putin spoke in Russian (the translation was provided by Carlson's show) and did not rule out the release of Wall Street Journal journalist Evan Gershkovich, who the United States says is unjustly detained, although he suggested Washington would have to reach a deal.

Russia has been plotting another long-awaited election victory for Putin in March, and its military has been gaining ground on the battlefield, while aid to Ukrainians is withheld in Congress by Republicans loyal to former President Donald Trump.

Carlson, who was fired from Fox News in April, has since worked as a freelance journalist.

Before the interview he boasted that he was the only one in the West willing to talk to Putin, a claim that was undermined by Russia, which indicated that Carlson got the interview precisely because of his pro-Russian stance on the Ukraine war.

Carlson has not only questioned US support for Ukraine, but has also appeared frequently on Kremlin propaganda channels since leaving Fox News.

Ukrainians were quick to criticize Carlson for talking to Putin while Russia continued bombing their country.
