Lent has begun.

Eglingen nutritionist Angelika Spöri explains what happens when fasting and how not to be tempted.

Egling - No more alcohol, finally giving up sweets or no more meat on the plate for the time being: some people use Lent as an opportunity to give up certain vices and unhealthy behaviors.

Some even refuse solid food for days.

Angelika Spöri is a nutritionist in the district.

The woman from Egling knows a few tricks to make fasting easier.

Tips for an easy fasting period: A conversation with nutrition expert Angelika Spöri

Ms. Spöri, the time of renunciation has begun.

How long was the last time you fasted?

Avoid solid food?

Seven days long.

I only consumed fruit teas, water and vegetable juices.

Hunger can then decrease after a certain period of time.

How does that work?

I could really use being less hungry sometimes.

At a certain point, the stomach and intestines are empty.

Insulin, which determines the feeling of hunger in the body, is no longer present.

The result is an appetite for sweets.

From then on, about two days after the start, the special phase of fasting begins.

How special?

Now it's time to get down to business.

The effect of fasting is different for each person.

But food deprivation can also work on a psychological level.

Some people feel very light and free, both internally and physically, sometimes even euphorically.

Fasting takes a toll on others.

There is no general answer.

But I can say one thing: the days can be overwhelming - so much so that it can bring you to tears.

And the physical effect?

During this time the body, especially the liver, detoxifies.

The organ is put under a lot of strain by alcohol, sweets and the many carbohydrates that we eat.

A week of food deprivation is like a breather during which the liver can recover.

You should drink a lot.

For those who want to take an easier approach to fasting: What do you recommend?

Quite classic is to avoid sugar, alcohol or meat.

The whole body is happy too.

In addition: Being more conscious of yourself and what you eat is always a good thing - no matter how many days of fasting you have.

And giving up food is just one way to get there.

More and more people are fasting while consuming social media.

But why is it so difficult for us to give up even the smallest things?

The reason for this lies in the subconscious.

If I've been doing something for months or years, it's hard to suddenly stop doing it.

An example: cycling.

When I cycle I don't always have to think about pedaling again.

I just do it.

Unfortunately, this also happens when shopping in front of the candy shelf.

I don't think, I just grab it.

Not doing that takes energy.

And how can I make Lent more bearable?

Fasting requires planning.

If I avoid sugar, I prepare vegetable snacks before I sit down in front of the TV.

If I'm going to abstain from alcohol, I could stock up on non-alcoholic beer before the next meeting with friends so that I'm not even tempted.

But the goal is not just to persevere, but also to happily accept the sacrifice.
