North Rhine-Westphalia's Prime Minister Hendrik Wüst (CDU) has urgently warned against the AfD in the 2024 election year.
“The AfD is a danger to democracy and a danger to our prosperity,” Wüst told journalists in Düsseldorf on Thursday.
The AfD's demand for a "Dexit", i.e. Germany's exit from the EU, will also be up for vote in the European elections in June, said the CDU politician and calculated the possible economic consequences for Germany.
Düsseldorf - The European elections are an “election of fate,” said Wüst.
“It’s about maintaining the strength of Europe, the strength of democracy and the foundation of our prosperity.”
At the same time, Wüst criticized the actions of protesting farmers as a result of the cancellation of the Green Party's political Ash Wednesday in Biberach, Baden-Württemberg, for security reasons.
He shares the concerns of farmers.
Protest is legitimate and can also be loud, he said.
But if the protest becomes aggressive and intimidating and prevents others from exercising their democratic rights, then a line has been crossed.
“We all have to return to treating each other with respect,” said the head of government.
The Greens canceled their event on Wednesday in Biberach at short notice due to security concerns after a demonstration got out of hand.
Among other things, farmers had dumped a pile of dung in front of the stairs to the town hall.
Police officers pushed the crowd back and had objects thrown at them.
They used pepper spray and batons.
