A letter from the federal government on the Self-Determination Act, which is available exclusively to our editorial team, caused harsh criticism from the CSU.

The traffic lights ignore dangers for children.

Berlin - In the debate about the planned self-determination law (SBGG) for trans people, the Union sharply criticizes the traffic light coalition.

, the traffic light ignores the dangers for minors during gender reassignment.

“Trans ideology” as a danger for children and young people?

The reason for the allegations are letters from the federal government's queer commissioner and the Federal Ministry of Health, in which they respond to questions from CSU politician Hierl about the self-determination law planned by the traffic light.

With the law, the government wants to make it easier, among other things, for trans people, i.e. people who do not feel they belong to their gender entry, to change this entry and their first name at the registry office.

So far, a psychological report and a court decision are still required.

Hierl, who sits on the Legal Affairs Committee of the Bundestag and has been working on the proposed law for some time, fears that the Self-Determination Act poses dangers for children and young people.

The law does not explicitly provide any relief for medical measures for gender reassignment.

However, Hierl argues that a change in gender on paper is often only the first step and that the federal government deliberately does not take this into account.

“It ignores the fact that the legal transition for children and young people usually results in medical measures such as the administration of opposite-sex hormones,” the Christian Socialist told our editorial team.

Union clearly against the traffic light self-determination law

Hierl cases from Great Britain are cause for concern.

In 2022, the largest British gender clinic for gender reassignment, Tavistock, was closed by the authorities because minors were apparently prescribed puberty blockers and had their sexual organs removed without sufficient advice.

The treatment method underlying the interventions, called “Dutch protocols,” is also viewed by some researchers as increasingly implausible.

The CSU member of the Bundestag brought these concerns to the government and asked what conclusions they drew from them.

“The federal government does not judge such events abroad,” says Queer Commissioner Lehmann’s written response dated February 7th.

That's not enough for the CSU politician.

She speaks of chilling examples that show “the dangers children and young people are exposed to when governments are blind to the problems of trans ideology.” According to Hierl, Lehmann “ignores all legitimate doubts and stubbornly represents his ideology.” The Franconian politician is clearly against the law that has already been passed by the cabinet and is currently before the German Bundestag.

“If the self-determination law goes through, incidents like those in London can also be feared in Germany.”

The Self-Determination Act does not affect gender reassignment

Such accusations from Union circles have been around for a long time, and the government regularly emphasizes that the Self-Determination Act does not make medical or surgical interventions easier.

The SBGG is intended to replace the transsexual law that has been in force since 1980 and is partially unconstitutional.

At the end of January, the federal government announced that it wanted to expand voluntary counseling services for children and young people who want to change their gender identity.

“These offers are also rated as helpful and supportive if they are voluntary;

In the case of compulsory consultations, however, there is a risk that they will be completed without internal participation,” says the federal government.

The draft law also provides for parental consent for minors and a mandatory three-month reflection period for the formal step.
