A digital expert spoke to students from the Jörg Lederer Middle School in Kaufbeuren about everyday digital life, media consumption and artificial intelligence.
Kaufbeuren – After a break of almost three years, a digital workshop took place again for the first time together with the Digital City Representative, Alexander Uhrle.
Together with 32 students from M9 at the Jörg Lederer Middle School, the digital expert spoke about everyday digital life, media consumption and artificial intelligence.
Digital workshop at Jörg Lederer Middle School in Kaufbeuren - expert talks about artificial intelligence
Uhrle provided information on various topics such as the use of AI in business in order to provide students and teachers with the basis for exciting discussions.
At the same time, all participants were able to take part in live surveys interactively using their own software or contribute further content during the presentation.
The surveys once again revealed some interesting findings: TikTok is now the No. 1 social network among students, ahead of Instagram.
Facebook follows far behind, but X (formerly Twitter) has also been left behind.
Around a third of the students already use the Buron app and around 10 percent only use the waste app, for example.
The students see clear potential in digitalization in school, community and private environments, although people are of course most satisfied in the private sector.
Digital City Representative talks to students about AI
The biggest discussions were on the topic of AI: A third of the students have never used AI, while only a fifth use ChatGPT, Copilot & Co regularly, for example.
B. used for homework and presentations.
The teachers' own AI skills and those of the teachers are assessed as very mediocre, although some teachers have already been cited as a positive example.
At the workshop, people not only talked about the opportunities but also the risks of AI.
However, the tenor, including with the teachers, was that the topic should at least be actively addressed.
Rector Christian Gebauer pointed out a resolution by the “Standing Scientific Commission (SWK/Bonn) of the Conference of Ministers of Education and Cultural Affairs” that AI should be actively included in lessons from the eighth grade onwards.
Finally, we talked about news sources: 40 percent of students said they primarily use social media as a news source.
Parents follow in second place with 27 percent.

Positive feedback at school
In a press release, the city of Kaufbeuren speaks of a “very good start to the workshops”, which can also be held at all other secondary schools.
Interested schools can contact the Digital City Representative, Alexander Uhrle.
The feedback from the students was consistently positive, with anonymous feedback for example: “It helped me a lot to understand the topics”, “Helpful” or “I thought it was very good”.
Rector Christian Gebauer concludes with a view to AI: “Artificial intelligence should be taught at school in order to give students a basic understanding of this important technology.”
