Berlin – The “Tagesschau” reports on current world events several times a day, reaching more than ten million TV viewers.
Something can go wrong.
A teleprompter glitch caused Jens Riewa (60) to stall on Monday (February 12, 2024).
However, the mishap cannot be seen in the ARD media library.
NDR now explains why.
Teleprompter breakdown on the “Tagesschau”: Jens Riewa tries to remain calm
On Monday (February 13, 2024) at 8:30 a.m., Jens Riewa wished his TV viewers a good morning and then actually wanted to report on the latest developments in the Middle East war.
But “wanted” is probably the key word here.
Because the ARD presenter actually couldn't because there was a glitch with the teleprompter.
“Dear colleagues, can you please switch the teleprompter, otherwise this won’t start at the moment?” he tells the director.
To gain time, he speaks very slowly and takes unnecessary pauses.
Afterwards there is an awkward silence.
But Jens Riewa is a complete professional, stays calm and looks straight into the camera.
“We have a small second and are happy to take it,” the “Tagesschau” speaker tries to fill the silence.
Then a clearing of the throat.
His gaze continues to be directed straight ahead into the TV camera, he briefly looks at his moderation cards, then straight ahead again.
“There's nothing computer-related here at the moment,” he finally has to admit.
However, only those viewers who were watching live on television saw the glitch.
Because Jens Riewa's masterful achievement in saving time was not even uploaded to the ARD media library.

A spokeswoman for NDR explains: “There was an operating error in the control room, which is why the teleprompter did not load the narrator's text.” There is a very simple explanation as to why the issue in question cannot be accessed online.
“The ARD media library only contains the 'Tagesschau' editions from the morning magazine on the hour in order not to overload the employees who stop the editions,” the broadcaster explains.
The incorrect broadcast was therefore not intended for the media library from the outset.

Speaking of the “Tagesschau” breakdown: Susanne Daubner made headlines in September 2023 with her fits of laughter.
Unlike Jens Riewa, she didn't have her emotions under control and burst out laughing during the live broadcast.
