The BMW i8 hybrid sports car is a design icon.

Now photos of the legitimate successor BMW i16 have been released.

But unfortunately there is a catch.

Munich - When it comes to the question of the most beautiful BMW models ever built, the i8 hybrid sports car takes one of the top places for many fans.

The plug-in hybrid, produced between 2013 and 2020, stands out with its special, streamlined design and an innovative drive concept - and has sold over 20,000 units worldwide, as the premium manufacturer explains.

According to an iconic commercial, even the former Mercedes boss could drive one of them.

BMW i8: Plans for the successor i16 ended up in the drawer because of Corona

A successor to the i8 would certainly suit BMW - there is currently no real sports car in the Munich car manufacturer's product range.

A successor for the elegant athlete should already be a reality - if the Corona crisis hadn't thwarted the plans.

Via Instagram, BMW design chief Domagoj Dukec revealed a “well revealed secret” of what the BMW i16 should look like.

The German-Croatian reveals in the English-language posting that the next-generation hybrid sports car is based on the BMW Vision M Next study and also adopts one or two design components from its predecessor.

BMW i16: Secret revealed - “History should not be made”

The BMW i16 has the “style of a future classic”, with points of contact with the BMW M1 - describes the 49-year-old.

Many car fans still rave about the iconic combustion engine sports car.

The project, which was discontinued during Corona, has two BMW logos on the rear section above the linear taillights.

According to the information, the development of the BMW i8 successor was completed in just twelve months; an important key is the structural similarity to the BMW i8.

“But history shouldn’t be made,” says Dukec, explaining that the world was changing when the project was about to be realized.

BMW scraps successor project for i8 - forever?

Under the Instagram post of the BMW chief designer (since 2019), numerous followers explain how sad they are at the tragic turn of events surrounding the BMW i16.

Many users are raving and demanding, for example, a petition so that BMW can actually create the elegant i8 successor, reports
